In this edition of Small Insight Big Impact, I share why and how I made the bold decision to leave over a 15-year career with the United Nations Children's Fund to focus on my family and personal values. My story is not just about a career change but about aligning my life with my core beliefs and priorities.
My career with the United Nations Children's Fund was marked by passion and dedication. I was fortunate to serve in various capacities across the globe, from New York to Copenhagen, and in duty stations like Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Eritrea. Despite the prestige and stability of his role, I faced the constant challenge of balancing my professional responsibilities with my family life.
As my four sons grew, I realized the increasing need for my presence at home. Honestly, the demands of my job often kept me away from home, leading to moments of reflection about my true priorities. Conversations with mentors and friends helped me see that my values of faith, family, and friendship needed to take precedence over my career.
My decision to leave the United Nations Children's Fund was not easy. It involved weighing the pros and cons, considering the impact on my family, my UN career, and the potential risks of stepping into the unknown. My story highlights the importance of self-reflection and the courage to make life-altering decisions that align with my values.
My transition to a global leadership role with Catholic Relief Services and now section chief at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management allowed me to spend time with family. This move fulfilled my professional aspirations and also allowed me to pursue other passions, such as being an Adjunct Professor at Unity Environmental University, and being present for my family, guiding my sons through their formative years.
Leaving the United Nations Children's Fund taught me valuable lessons about personal growth and the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone. I discovered new opportunities (such as Board Director of entities) and skills, realizing that true fulfillment comes from living authentically and embracing change.
My journey is a reminder that our careers should serve our lives, not the other way around. I hope stories will encourage you to reflect on our own paths and consider whether our current roles align with our deepest values.
