There are moments in life that arrive with remarkable subtlety. They unfold gently, creating space for reflection and leaving a lasting imprint long after they pass. One such moment came for me, as a water and environmental health expert, during a United Nations Post-Disaster Needs Assessment following Hurricane Maria in 2017 in Dominica. I initially understood the assignment as a professional responsibility shaped by experience and preparation. Over time, I came to see it as a formative journey, one that deepened my understanding of leadership, service, and the strength found in presence.
What stood out most from that journey was the flight from San Juan to Dominica, where I found myself as the sole passenger on the plane. The experience carried an unusual sense of focus and uninterrupted thought. There were no conversations or distractions, only the steady rhythm of travel that created a rare stillness. That stillness became an invitation to pause, to reflect on leadership issues often overlooked, and to recalibrate my mental compass. As I looked out the window, reflecting on my work with the United Nations Children’s Fund, clarity about what leadership looks like when it is practiced without expectation of visibility or acknowledgment emerged naturally. In that moment of self-awareness, solitude revealed itself as the internal alignment of service with responsibility and intention that helped shape my values and decisions. From that moment, I realized leadership is formed quietly in situations where presence matters more than performance.
Arriving in Dominica, I encountered a community defined by cooperation, resilience, and shared purpose, where I saw people restoring their daily life with determination and care. I saw neighbors supported one another through shared effort; resources were distributed thoughtfully, and there was a collective commitment to move forward together. In that environment, leadership revealed itself through everyday actions, listening attentively, offering support, and contributing steadily. The experience reinforced a powerful insight that leadership flourishes where presence, empathy, and trust are consistently and sincerely practiced. Moments of collective effort, rooted in mutual responsibility and care, sharpened my perspective and reminded me that progress gains strength through shared commitment.
As I visited affected communities, I observed individuals who led community actions with hope and care. Their influence created confidence and momentum through steadiness, consistency, and by showing up each day with intention. Their example reinforced the idea that leadership, when expressed quietly, has the power to shape outcomes in meaningful and lasting ways, and confirmed my understanding of courage and hope. I learned that courage, through the lens of consistency and commitment, is the willingness to remain engaged, attentive, and thoughtful. I saw hope emerge as a practical and sustaining force and lived through thoughtful planning, steady action, and mutual encouragement. In fact, hope was visible in small decisions, collaborative problem-solving, and the belief that rebuilding remained possible. I learned that hope for the future grows through presence and honesty, and without hope, one ceases to live in the present.
My trip to Dominica:
Taught me that serving others often stretches and humbles you, makes you listen more, act without all the answers, and you get to understand yourself more clearly.Reminded me that leadership often begins with framing decisions in solitude and during reflection in preparation for the moment of responsibility. Changed me, through what I witnessed and what it awakened within me. It affirmed that solitude brings clarity, courage is practiced daily, and hope is nurtured through action. Reinforced my understanding that leadership is about presence and showing up fully, even when no one is watching.
